Sushmita Sen was born into the Sen family on November 19, 1975, in Hyderabad, India. Her father, Shubeer Sen, served as a Wing Commander in the Indian Air Force, while her mother, Subhra Sen, was a jewelry designer with a store based in Dubai. Sushmita has two siblings: a sister named Neelam, who is married to Nauman Malik, and a brother named Rajeev. Her maternal grandfather was a poet.

She attended various schools in Jorhat and Nagpur, but the majority of her schooling was at the Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute and Air Force Silver School in Delhi, due to her father's postings. Sushmita was known to be somewhat of a tomboy and spent much of her time with male classmates. Although her schooling was in Hindi medium, she later became proficient in English, ultimately pursuing an English Honors degree alongside Journalism. Her place of birth in Hyderabad endowed her with fluent Urdu-speaking skills.
Sushmita's first public appearance was at the Air Force Club Contest when she was 15 years old. Following that, she participated in a few fashion shows. In 1994, she decided to compete in the Miss India beauty pageant, despite being seen as an underdog against the favored Aishwarya Rai. To everyone's surprise, Sushmita won the Miss India title, while Aishwarya became the First Runner-up. Both of them went on to win prestigious international titles, with Sushmita becoming Miss Universe and Aishwarya becoming Miss World. Interestingly, Sushmita's final outfit for the Miss Universe pageant was crafted by a little-known tailor from Meena Bazar, with assistance from her mother.
