Chan had a difficult early life. His family was poor, and they relocated to Australia when he was six. A year later, his parents returned him to Hong Kong to attend a tough boarding school. There, he studied acrobatics, singing, martial arts, and mime. These abilities enabled him to join a professional tumbling team and land employment as a kid actor and stuntman.
In the late 1970s, Chan appeared in several kung fu films. Unlike Bruce Lee's serious technique, Chan employed humor in hit films such as Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master. He also created, directed, and starred in The Fearless Hyena (1979), and had complete control over The Young Master (1980). This helped Golden Harvest become Hong Kong's largest film company.
Chan's 1980s films, such as Project A and Police Story, demonstrated his ability to direct battle scenes and do perilous stunts. Rumble in the Bronx, released in 1995, marked his debut in the American market. Rush Hour (1998), starring Chris Tucker, was his biggest Hollywood triumph, and it spawned two sequels.Chan also appeared in several Hollywood films, including Shanghai Noon (2000) and The Karate Kid (2010). He has voiced characters in animated films such as Kung Fu Panda (2008). Chan's international career was recognized with an honorary Academy Award in 2016.
