LeBron James
James, a basketball prodigy who has been well-known in his community since elementary school, won three titles as Ohio's Mr. Basketball (high-school player of the year) while playing at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron.
In his junior year, he made national news after being featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, where the publication referred to him as "The Chosen One." James was chosen by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the first overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft because he was widely regarded as the best high school player in the country during his senior year.
In addition, he agreed to a record-breaking $90 million endorsement deal with Nike before even taking the field in a competitive match. James led the Cavaliers in scoring, steals, and playing time during the 2003–04 season despite the difficulties posed by these exceptional conditions, and he also took home the league's Rookie of the Year award.
James, a 6-foot-8 (2.03-metre) "point forward" who was equally skilled at playing close to the basket as he was at bringing the ball down the court, posed a special challenge for rival teams. His unmatched athleticism and well-muscled frame would not have been out of place in the National Football League. In his second season, he was selected as one of the starting forwards for the Eastern Conference All-Star team.
These feats were surpassed in the 2006–07 campaign when James led Cleveland to the team's first appearance in the NBA Finals. Despite being swept by the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA finals after the Cavaliers upset the much favored Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference finals, James' outstanding playoff play led many observers to rank him among the league's top players.
When his contract with the Cavaliers expired at the end of the 2009–10 season, James arguably became the most sought–after free agent in NBA history. In what was arguably his best season as an individual, he averaged 26.8 points, 7.3 assists, and a career-high 8.0 rebounds per game while shooting a remarkable.565 field-goal percentage—a remarkable number of made shots for someone who frequently played away from the basket.
He also posted a career-high.565 field-goal percentage. James earned his fourth league MVP title that season after contributing to Miami's 27-game winning streak, which was the second-longest in the history of the NBA. James once again had a good regular season in 2015–16, but his true brilliance came during the postseason.
In the NBA finals, he guided the Cavaliers to a rematch against the Warriors, who had broken the previous league record with 73 victories during the regular season. James had perhaps his best regular season in 2016–17, averaging 8.7 assists, 8.6 rebounds, and 26.4 points per game while also setting career highs in each category.
For the first time in his career, he completed an entire 82-game regular season in 2017–18. He also led the NBA in minutes played per game (36.9) while averaging 27.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, and a new career-high 9.1 assists. James signed the Los Angeles Lakers as a free agent in the next offseason.
He continued to perform well, averaging 27.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 8.3 assists per game, although he missed a large amount of action for the first time in his career due to an injury (a strained groin). James' personal postseason streak ended after 13 seasons when the Lakers finished the 2018–19 campaign with a 37–45 record while the team struggled without him.
Aside from his accomplishments in the NBA, James also played
for the American men's basketball teams that won the gold at the 2008 Games,
the bronze at the 2004 Games, and the gold at the 2012 Games.
