Paulo Coelho was born into a Roman Catholic household in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1947. In his early years, he, like many other young children, rebelled against his parents and their regulations. His parents disapproved of his aspirations to become a writer since they were ardent Christians. His parents had other plans for him than writing; his father was an engineer. Of course, Coelho disagreed with his parents' traditional and stringent expectations of him. In reality, he and his parents were at odds due to his hostility toward them.
As he grew older, he began associating with a troublesome crowd and questioning his parents' ideals with increasing zeal. So much so that his parents assumed he was insane. This battle reached a boiling point when Paulo Coelho was 17 years old, and his parents eventually felt that the only way to assist him overcome his extreme ideas and fierce rebuking of their methods and to help him "get it together," was to put him in a mental institution. Paulo Coelho would spend three years at this facility, but it accomplished its goal, at least initially, as he abandoned his dreams of becoming a writer in favor of the more respectable road of attending law school.
However, Coelho dropped out of law school in 1970 and opted to explore overseas. When he returned in 1972, he found work penning songs for prominent Brazilian artists and composers. However, after a few years, Paulo Coelho would finally find work for several firms, including CBS Records, with whom he remained until 1980. While working in various occupations in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Coelho wrote two books that went nowhere. Coelho would then traverse the world again in the early 1980s.
Thus, following a series of encounters and fortuitous connections, Coelho would return to his boyhood religion while simultaneously choosing to completely reembrace his genuine destiny as a full-time writer. He would eventually write his first book on his transforming journey, particularly his experiences along the renowned Spanish pilgrimage route, Santiago de Compostela. The book was suitably titled "The Pilgrimage," and it was released in 1987 by Coelho.
