Michael Jackson, also known as Michael Joseph Jackson or Michael Joe Jackson was an American singer, songwriter, and dancer who was the most popular entertainer in the world in the early and mid-1980s. He was born August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, and died June 25, 2009, in Los Angeles, California. Michael Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana, into one of the most renowned musical families of the rock era. He was the youngest and most brilliant of five siblings that his father, Joseph, molded into the dazzling Jackson 5 group of child stars. The Jackson 5 consisted of Michael Jackson (born May 4, 1951, in Gary), Tito Jackson (born October 15, 1953, in Gary), Jermaine Jackson (born December 11, 1954, in Gary), and Marlon Jackson (born December 11, 1954, in Gary) (b. March 12, 1957, Gary).
The Jackson 5
In 1969,
the trio was signed by Berry Gordy, Jr., president of Motown Records. The
Jackson 5 were an instant success because they wore the loudest clothes, had
the biggest Afros, had the quickest choreography, and had youthful, soulful
energy. With "I Want You Back," "ABC," "The Love You
Save," and "I'll Be There," they had four consecutive number one
pop singles in 1970. The Jackson family's series of singles for Motown lasted
into 1975, with Michael topping the mainstream charts with "Ben" and
reaching number two with "Rockin' Robin," and the Jackson 5 creating
trendsetting dance tracks like "Dancing Machine". Michael's voice
changed as he grew older, family issues developed, and a contract impasse
ensued. The Jacksons eventually left Motown and signed with Epic Records as the
Jacksons. Jermaine Jackson remained in Motown as a solo performer, while his
younger brother, Randy Jackson, took his position (in full Steven Randall
Jackson; b. October 29, 1961).
The “King of Pop”
Off the
Wall (1979), Jackson's first solo album for Epic, surpassed all expectations
and went on to become the year's best-selling record (it eventually sold more
than 20 million copies). The major international success singles "Don't
Stop 'til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You," both of which emphasized
Michael's exuberant approach and capitalized on the present disco dance rage,
were produced by industry veteran Quincy Jones. Three years later, he returned
with Thriller, a tour de force that featured a slew of guest stars and
catapulted him to international superstardom. Thriller earned a flood of
prizes, including a record-setting eight Grammys; lasted on the charts for more
than two years; and sold more than 40 million copies, long retaining the
distinction of being the best-selling album in history. The first song on the
album, “The Girl Is Mine,” an easygoing duet with Paul McCartney, soared to
number one on the rhythm-and-blues charts and number two on the pop charts in
the fall of 1982.
By 1984,
Michael Jackson had established himself as the "King of Pop" around
the world. One of the most popular concert events of 1984 was his
much-anticipated Victory reunion tour with his brothers. "We Are the
World," a hallmark record for the USA for Africa, an all-star
collaboration focused on famine relief, was written by Jackson and Lionel
Richie in 1985.
In the
early 1990s, Jackson's unusual, reclusive lifestyle became increasingly contentious.
In 1993, he was accused of child abuse by a 13-year-old boy he had befriended;
the case was resolved out of court. Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis
Presley's daughter, in secret in 1994, but the marriage lasted less than two
years. Jackson married again soon after, and this time he had children, however,
the marriage ended in divorce. While he remained global fame, his reputation in
the United States took a long time to recover, and it suffered even more damage
when he was arrested and charged with child molestation in November 2003.
Jackson was acquitted in 2005 after a 14-week trial that turned into a media
circus.
