Dwayne Johnson
Johnson was born into a family of wrestlers. "High
Chief" Peter Maivia, his maternal grandpa, rose to prominence in the 1960s
and 1970s. Rocky Johnson, Johnson's father, worked the American regional
wrestling circuit and boxed; in 1974, he was a sparring partner for George
Foreman, who was preparing for Muhammad Ali's "Rumble in the Jungle."

The younger Johnson, on the other hand, preferred the
gridiron to the mat at first. He was a notable high school athlete and a member
of the University of Miami's 1991 NCAA Championship football team (Bachelor of
General Studies, 1995). He went to wrestling after an injury ended his career
in the Canadian Football League.
Johnson made his World Wrestling Federation (WWF) debut in
1996 as Rocky Maivia, a name that paid homage to both his father and
grandfather. He was gifted with a unique combination of size, speed, and
agility as well as great microphone abilities. Johnson was highly promoted as a
"face" and won the WWF Intercontinental title after only a few months
of exposure. In 1998, The Rock won the first of multiple world championship
titles after a series of high-profile feuds with the WWF's best talents.
Johnson's brazen charisma in the ring translated well to the
big screen, and his presence in The Mummy Returns (2001) marked the start of a
new chapter in his career. Johnson was neither the first nor last professional
wrestler to be courted by Hollywood, but he was unquestionably the most
successful. The Scorpion King (2002) and The Rundown (2003) followed "The
Mummy Returns" (2003). He retired from the ring in 2004 to pursue acting
full-time.
Johnson also gave the voice of a demigod in Disney's
animated feature Moana (2016). In 2017, he starred in Baywatch, a comedy based
on the popular TV show about lifeguards, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, a
film based on a Chris Van Allsburg children's novel. In the action film
Skyscraper, the next year, Johnson played a father who goes to extraordinary
lengths to save his family from a burning skyscraper. He then appeared in Fast
& Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (both 2019), a spin-off from the
long-running franchise, and Jumanji: The Next Level (both 2017), a sequel to
the 2017 blockbuster. He co-starred in Jungle Cruise, an action-comedy based on
a theme park ride, with Emily Blunt in 2021. Johnson also appeared in a number
of television shows. He starred in Ballers (2015–19), an HBO comedy series
about a former football player who becomes a financial counselor to other
sports stars, and he presented the reality television series The Heroin 2013.
Johnson went on to produce and host the reality TV show The Titan Games
(2019–), which featured various athletic competitions. Later, he starred in the
comedy series Young Rock (2021–), which was based on his life.
