Diana Princess

Diana, Princess of Wales, was born on July 1, 1961, in Sandringham, Norfolk, England, under the name Diana Frances Spencer. She was born at Park House, a rented property on Queen Elizabeth II's Sandringham estate where she spent her childhood playing with the queen's younger boys, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. Diana, along with her brother and two sisters, lived with her father after her parents.

When her father succeeded the earldom in 1975, she became Lady Diana Spencer. Diana received her education at Riddles worth Hall (near Thetford, Norfolk) and West Heath School (Sevenoaks, Kent). Diana returned to England after attending the Chateau d'Oex finishing school in Montreux, Switzerland, and worked as a kindergarten assistant at the famous Young England school in Pamlico.

In 1980, she reestablished touch with the royal family, and her connection with Prince Charles developed. Their engagement was announced on February 24, 1981, and her beauty and modest demeanor which gave her the nickname "Shy Di" made her an instant media and popular sensation. On July 29, 1981, the pair married in St. Paul's Cathedral in front of hundreds of millions of people in a worldwide televised event. Prince William Arthur Philip Louis of Wales, their first child, was born on June 21, 1982, and Prince Henry ("Harry") Charles Albert David, was born on September 15, 1984.

However, the princess and prince's marital problems were getting worse. Diana suffered from severe depressive symptoms, low self-esteem, eating disorders, and the stress of being followed by both the official media and the tabloid press, particularly the paparazzi. The pair formally separated in 1992 after mutual recriminations on both sides revealed the marital breakdown.

Diana continued her successful public image after the divorce and continued many of the activities she had previously undertaken on behalf of charities, including the arts, children's issues, and AIDS victims. She was also involved in the campaign to ban land mines. Diana took her sons to hospitals, homeless shelters, and orphanages so that they might "understand people's feelings, insecurities, misery, and hopes and dreams." She took them to fast-food restaurants and public transportation to familiarize them with life outside of royal luxury. She was dubbed "the People's Princess" for her compassion, personal warmth, humility, and accessibility.

The media were often invasive, despite the fact that she used her popularity to great purpose in promoting her philanthropic efforts. It was while attempting to evade pursuing journalists that Diana was killed, along with her companion, Dodi Fayed, and their driver, Henri Paul, in an automobile accident in a tunnel under the streets of Paris in 1997.
