Bal Thackeray

Bal Thackeray, full name Balasaheb Keshav Thackeray, was an Indian journalist and politician who founded the Shiv Sena ("Army of Shiva") political party and advocated for a strong pro-Hindu policy in India. He was born on January 23, 1926, in Pune, Maharashtra state, India, and died on November 17, 2012, in Mumbai. The Sena became a powerful political movement in Maharashtra, under his leadership in western India.

Career & Established Shiv Sena

Thackeray began his career as a cartoonist for the Mumbai-based Free Press Journal in the early 1950s (Bombay). His drawings also appeared in the Asahi Shimbun, a Japanese daily newspaper, and The New York Times on Sunday. He became more interested in politics in the 1960s. Through his work for the weekly Marathi-language publication Marmik, which he co-published with his brother and polemicized against the influence of "outsiders" in Maharashtra, he established a significant regional following. He established the Shiv Sena in 1966.

Despite the fact that Thackeray never held a public office or sought election, he was widely considered Maharashtra's most influential man for many years. He was known as Maharashtra's "godfather" or Hindu Hridaysamrat ("Emperor of the Hindu Heart") by his legion of fanatical followers. His party called for India's secular status to be revoked and Hinduism to be declared the country's official religion. After the Shiv Sena took power in Maharashtra in the 1990s, Thackeray had Bombay renamed Mumbai after the goddess Mumbadevi—the Marathi name for the city—and when Thackeray was mocked by novelist Salman Rushdie in The Moor's Last Sigh (1995) and the book was immediately banned in Maharashtra.

Thackeray had been accused of encouraging deadly disputes between Hindus and Muslims throughout the years. The most prominent episode occurred in 1992–93 when almost 1,000 people were killed in Mumbai after anti-Muslim violence that lasted several weeks.

Thackeray's party rose to prominence in Maharashtra politics. The Shiv Sena won 138 out of 288 seats in the state assembly in 1995, forming a coalition government with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Thackeray remained a lightning rod for controversy while in power. In 1992, his supporters demolished the 16th-century Babri Masjid ("Mosque of Babur") in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, and he was jailed in 2000 on grounds of inciting the deadly 1992–93 Mumbai riots. Despite the fact that Thackeray never contested the charges, they were dropped after a court concluded that the case's statute of limitations had expired.
