Bob Marley’s Life Before Getting Famous

The full name of Bob Marley is Robert Nesta Marley, albeit he was born Nesta Robert Marley, according to other sources. Because Nesta sounded like a girl's name, a Jamaican passport officer rearranged his first and middle names. His's father was due to heart attack in 1955 at his 70s when Bob was only 10 years old. Edward Booker, a US federal servant, was his mother's second husband.

Neville Livingston (better known as Bunny Wailer) and Bob Marley had grown up together in Nine Mile, Jamaica, as boyhood pals of Neville. When Marley was 12 years old, he and his mother relocated from Nine Mile to Trenchtown, Kingston, Jamaica.

New ska music and R&B from US radio stations were part of their musical excursions with Livingston. In the neighbourhood, Joe Higgs, a member of the famous singing duo Higgs and Wilson, supported Marley. In addition to assisting the group in honing their harmonies, Higgs also began teaching Marley how to play the guitar.

Bob’s Career

The Early Years of 1962-1972

"Judge Not," "One Cup of Coffee," "Do You Still Love Me?" and "Terror" were all recorded at Federal Studios in 1962 for Leslie Kong, a local music producer. In February 1964, their song "Simmer Down" for the Coxsone label became a Jamaican No. 1 and sold around 70,000 copies. After the departure of Braithwaite, Kelso, and Smith in 1966, just Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Peter Tosh remained in the Wailers.

The Upsetters, led by Lee "Scratch" Perry, linked up with Bob Marley and the Wailers to create what is widely considered to be their best work. Bob Marley, Rita Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer worked with JAD Records in Kingston and London to re-cut some of their older recordings to popularize the Wailers' sound. Sole Shakedown Party, Stop That Train, Caution, Tell It on the Mountain, Soon Come, Can't You See, Soul Captives, Cheer Up, Back Out, and Do It Twice are just a few of the many songs on this album. On "Stay With Me" and "Splish for My Splash," Bob Marley channeled "the languid love ballad style of 1960s performers."

In an attempt to break Bob Marley into the US charts, this tape is unique in that it was heavily inspired by pop rather than reggae.

Moving to Island Records from 1972 until 1974

In 1972, Bob Marley went on a UK tour with soul singer Johnny Nash after signing with CBS Records in London. In London, the Wailers requested Brent Clarke to introduce them to Chris Blackwell while they were in town. Island Records owner Blackwell had obtained a license to use some of their Coxsone recordings.

A £4,000 advance was offered during the meeting to record an album. Catch a Fire was the first reggae band to use a cutting-edge recording facility. Catch a Fire, the Wailers' first album for Island Records, was released in April 1973 to critical and commercial acclaim. Following the release of I Shot The Sheriff, the album Burnin' was released later that year.

For the album's overdubbing, Marley flew to London and worked with Blackwell at Island Studios under his watchful eye. During this time, Blackwell gave Marley the use of his Kingston home and business.

Line-up changes and shooting in 1974–1976

With a live rendition of "No Woman, No Cry" from the Live! Album, he got his first success outside of Jamaica in 1975. Rastaman Vibration (1976) was his breakthrough album in the United States, peaking at No. 50 on the Billboard Soul Charts in 1976. Three Bob Marley's entourage members were shot and injured in an attack two days before a free performance organized by Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley.

Relocation to England from 1976 till 1979.

Bob Marley went into self-imposed exile in England for two years after leaving Jamaica at 1976. He was caught and convicted of possessing a minor amount of marijuana in London. To help defuse tensions between rival political factions, Bob Marley returned to his native Jamaica in 1978 to play at the One Love Peace Concert.

The late 1970s–early 1980s

Defiant and politically motivated, Survival was released in 1979 by the punk rock band New Order. The songs "Zimbabwe," "Africa Unite," "Wake Up and Live," and "Survival" show Marley's sympathy for the African people's hardships. This opposition to South African apartheid was displayed when he attended the Amandla Festival in Boston in July 1979. Marley's posthumous album Confrontation, released in 1983, contains previously unheard material, including the song "Buffalo Soldier."

Health problems and demise

Marley was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma beneath a toenail in July 1977 and had surgery in August. Acral lentiginous melanoma may develop on the soles of the foot or beneath the toenails, both of which are difficult to detect. Due to his strong religious views, he refused to have his toe removed as recommended by his physicians.

When the nail and its bed were removed, a piece of flesh was cut from his thigh to patch the wound. His lung and brain cancer had spread to his lungs, and he died on May 11, 1981, at age 36. The remainder of Marley's tour was called off, and he went to Germany to see Josef Issels for therapy. After eight months of treatment, Marley flew back to Jamaica that had failed to stop his cancer from progressing. Marley's essential functions deteriorated throughout the flight.
