Ratan Tata, fully Ratan Naval Tata, born December 28, 1937, in Bombay India, an Indian businessman who chaired the Tata Group, is a coalition based in Mumbai.

A member of a prominent family of Indian industrialists and service providers was educated at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, where he obtained a B.S. in the construction of buildings before returning to work in India. 

He gained experience in many Tata Group businesses and was appointed as managing director (1971) in one of them, National Radio and Electronics Co. He became chairman of Tata Industries ten years later and in 1991 succeeded his uncle, JR.D. Tata, as chairman of Tata Group.

When he took over the leadership of the corporation, Dad desperately wanted to grow it, and he focused on developing his businesses. In 2000 the group acquired London-based Tetley Tea for $ 431.3 million, and in 2004 bought truck production from South Korea's Daewoo Motors for $ 102 million. In 2007 Tata Steel completed the largest takeover by an Indian company when it acquired the largest producer of Anglo-Dutch steel Corus Group for $ 11.3 billion.

In 2008 Tata oversaw the acquisition of Tata Motors for British high-end Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles from Ford Motor Company. The $ 2.3 billion deal marks the largest acquisition ever made by an Indian car company. 

The following year the company unveiled the Tata Nano, a small rear-engine, car-shaped car with an initial price of about 100,000 Indian rupees, or about $ 2,000. Although only 3 meters (3 meters) long and 1.5 meters wide, the highly acclaimed "People's Car" can accommodate up to five adults and, in Tata's words, will provide "safe, inexpensive, a kind of air transport" to millions of middle-income consumers In December 2012, Tata retired as chairman of the Tata Group.

He served as interim chairman in October 2016 following the dismissal of his successor, Cyrus Mistry.Tata retired in January 2017 when Natarajan Chandrasekaran was elected chairman of the Tata Group.

Among other things, he received the Padma Bhushan, one of India's most prestigious public awards, in 2000.
