Narendra Damodardas
Modi
Narendra Modi, full of Narendra
Damodardas Modi, (born September 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, India), an Indian
politician and government official who rose to become the leader of the
Baratiya Janata Party (BJP). In 2014 he led his party to victory in the Lok
Sabha (India's lower house of parliament), after which he was sworn in as Prime
Minister of India. Before that, he had served (2001–14) as prime minister
(head of state) of the state of Gujarat in western India.
Early life and
political career
Modi grew up in a small village north of
Gujarat, and graduated with an M.A. in political science at Gujarat University
in Ahmadabad. He joined the pro-Hindu organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh
(RSS) in the early 1970s and founded the RSS student wing, Akhil Bharatiya
Vidyarthi Parishad, in his area. Modi rose to prominence in the RSS empire, and
his association with the organization greatly benefited him in his next
political career.
Modi joined the BJP in 1987, and a year
later he was appointed general secretary of the Gujarat party branch. He has
been instrumental in greatly strengthening the party's presence in the state in
the years to come. In 1990 Modi was one of the members of the BJP participating
in the coalition government and helped the BJP win the 1995 legislative
elections that in March allowed the party to form the first BJP India-led
government. The control of the BJP in the national government was temporary,
however, it ended in September 1996.
The rise of
politics and time as prime minister of Gujarat
In 1995 Modi was appointed secretary of
the BJP national organization in New Delhi, and three years later he was
appointed General Secretary. He remained in office for another three years, but
in October 2001 he replaced Gujarat's prime minister, the former BJP member
Keshubhai Patel, after Patel was accused of failing to respond to the country's
government after a massive Bhuj earthquake in Gujarat earlier that year killed
more than 20,000 people. Modi entered his first election in the
February 2002 by-elections which won him a seat at the Gujarat national
convention.
Modi's political career thereafter
remained a mixture of deep debate and self-promotion. His role as prime
minister during the civil unrest that ravaged Gujarat in 2002 was widely
questioned. He was accused of allowing violence or, at the very least, doing
little to stop the killing of more than a thousand people, most of them
Muslims, which occurred after the deaths of scores of Hindu passengers during
the burning of their train in the town of Godhra. In 2005 the United States
refused to grant him a political visa because he was responsible
for the 2002 riots, and the United Kingdom also criticized his role in 2002.
Although in later years Modi himself escaped any accusations or accusations
from the judiciary or investigative organizations - some of his close
associates were found guilty of involvement in the 2002 events and received
lengthy prison sentences. Modi's administration was also accused of being
involved in an innocent murder (variously referred to as a
"conspiracy" or "false encounter") by police or other
authorities. One such case, in 2004, involved the deaths of a woman and three
men whose officers claimed to be members of Lashkar-e-Taiba (a Pakistani-based terrorist organization involved in the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai) and
suspected of plotting to assassinate Modi.
Modi’s repeated political successes in
Gujarat, however, made him the most important leader in the BJP dynasty and led
to his reconciliation and political entry. Under his leadership, the BJP won a
landslide victory in the December 2002 general election, winning 127 of the 182
seats in the chamber (including Modi's seat). Proclaiming the growth and
development manifesto in Gujarat, the BJP also won the 2007 national elections,
with 117 seats, the party won the 2012 election, and won 115 seats. In both
cases, Modi won his competition and returned as prime minister.
During his tenure as head of government
in Gujarat, Modi made a name for himself as a knowledgeable manager and was
credited with the rapid growth of the country's economy. In addition, his
performance and party elections helped to advance Modi's position not only as a
highly influential leader within the party but also as a potential member of
the Indian prime minister. In June 2013 Modi was elected as the leader of the
BJP campaign for the 2014 elections in Lok Sabha.
